Custom AI Chatbot Cost in 2026: 3 Ways to Buy

How much does a custom AI chatbot cost in 2026? $0.99 per resolution, $24.17 a month, or $37 in tokens per 10,000 chats. See where a build pays off.

How much does a custom AI chatbot cost in 2026?

For a Las Vegas law firm or car dealership, a custom AI chatbot costs anywhere from $0.99 per resolved conversation to $150,000 or more for an agency build, depending on which of three ways you buy it. On price lists read in September 2026, Fin charges $0.99 per outcome, Tidio's builder starts at $24.17 a month, and a custom build on a model API runs about $37 in tokens per 10,000 conversations before any build labor. One thing changed in September 2026: Anthropic's pricing page now says the planned September 1 increase on its mid-size model will not occur.

Every figure below comes from four pages. Three are vendor price lists: Fin's pricing page, Tidio's pricing page and Anthropic's API pricing page. All three were read on September 29, 2026, the first two carry no date of their own, and none has a sample size because a price list is not a study. A vendor can change any of them tomorrow.

The fourth is Master of Code's chatbot pricing guide, updated in July 2026. It says its ranges come from industry expertise and case studies, and it discloses no sample size. Treat it as one agency's view of the market, not a survey.

Three ways to buy, and the price unit decides the bill

The three options are not three prices for the same thing. They bill on different units: per outcome, per month, and per token plus a one-time build. Which unit suits you depends almost entirely on how many conversations you handle.

Fin's page says outcomes cover resolutions, procedure handoffs, disqualifications and self-serve routings, and that you are charged for only one outcome per conversation even if the agent takes several actions. A qualification is priced separately at $9.99, roughly ten times the base rate. On helpdesks other than Intercom there is a 50 outcome monthly minimum, which works out to a floor of $49.50 (50 times $0.99). The page also lists a free 14-day trial with no usage limits.

Tidio sells allowances instead. Starter is $24.17 a month with 100 billable conversations, about $0.24 each ($24.17 divided by 100). Growth starts at $49.17 a month from 250 billable conversations, about $0.20 each. Plus starts at $300 a month plus monthly usage, and Premium is by contact only, with Lyro AI conversations from 3,000.

The catch is that the AI part is metered separately. Starter includes 50 Lyro AI Agent conversations as a one-off allowance, not a monthly one. The standalone Lyro add-on starts at $32.50 a month from 50 Lyro conversations, which is $0.65 per AI conversation at that entry tier, and removing Tidio branding is another $16.67 a month.

Add Starter, the Lyro add-on and branding removal and the entry price is $73.34 a month ($24.17 plus $32.50 plus $16.67). Confirm on the page how those pieces combine before you budget. Remember too that a builder is a hosted product you configure, not a custom build.

The token bill is the smallest line: $37 to $130 per 10,000 conversations

A custom build runs on a model API, and the API bills per token. Anthropic's page lists Claude Haiku 4.5, its small model, at $1 per million input tokens and $5 per million output tokens. Claude Sonnet 5.5, the mid-size model, is $2 input and $10 output. The page states that the Sonnet 5 introductory price of $2 and $10 is now the standard price.

The page's own worked example says 10,000 support tickets at about 3,700 tokens per conversation cost about $37.00 on Haiku 4.5. That is 37 million tokens (10,000 times 3,700), and $37 is what 37 million tokens cost at the $1 input rate. The extract we worked from does not show how the example splits input from output, and output costs five times as much. So we ran a second, more conservative version.

Assume each conversation uses 3,000 input tokens and 700 output tokens. That split is our assumption, not Anthropic's. Across 10,000 conversations it is 30 million input tokens and 7 million output tokens.

Our split, Sonnet 5.5$60 (30M at $2)$70 (7M at $10)$130$0.013

The mid-size model costs exactly double the small one on every line, because both of its rates are double. Even so, the most expensive row is $0.013 per conversation. The model is not where the money goes.

Two discounts on the page can push the bill lower. Cache reads are $0.10 per million tokens on Haiku 4.5 and $0.20 on Sonnet 5.5, one tenth of the input rate, which matters because a chatbot resends the same instructions and business details in every conversation. The 50 percent Batch API discount suits work that can wait, such as summarizing yesterday's transcripts, not live chat.

A build beats $0.99 per outcome only above about 640 outcomes a month

Put the per-outcome fee next to the token bill and the gap is $0.977 per conversation ($0.99 minus $0.013 on the Sonnet 5.5 split). That gap is what a build has to earn back. The question is how many conversations it takes.

Take the lowest agency figure in the Master of Code guide, $15,000, and assume you want the build paid back in 24 months. The 24 months is our assumption. That is $625 a month ($15,000 divided by 24), and $625 divided by $0.977 is about 640 billable outcomes a month. Below that volume, paying Fin $0.99 at a time is cheaper than owning the bot.

Be careful with that $15,000. It is the bottom of the guide's rule-based band, meaning a scripted bot, not an AI agent. For the AI-powered band, which starts at $75,000, the same math gives $3,125 a month and a break-even near 3,200 outcomes a month ($3,125 divided by $0.977).

Maintenance moves the line further. The guide says ongoing costs exist for maintenance, updates, training and scaling but gives no percentage, so you have to supply your own number. Assume $500 a month, purely as an illustration. The $15,000 build now needs $1,125 a month of savings, or about 1,150 outcomes a month ($1,125 divided by $0.977).

Here is where the conclusion flips entirely. At 500 outcomes a month, Fin bills about $495 (500 times $0.99, our arithmetic on the published rate, not a figure the page prints). That is less than the assumed $500 of maintenance alone. At that volume a build never pays back, no matter how cheap the tokens are.

Two worked examples: 150 chats a month and 5,000 chats a month

Start with a two-attorney law firm whose site chat handles 150 conversations a month. Assume every one ends in a billable outcome, which overstates the bill. Fin would cost $148.50 a month (150 times $0.99), or $1,782 a year.

The token bill for the same 150 conversations on a custom build is $1.95 a month (150 times $0.013). The saving is $146.55 a month, so a $15,000 build takes about 102 months to pay back ($15,000 divided by $146.55). That is eight and a half years, before maintenance. This firm should rent.

A builder plan is the other rental option. Tidio's Growth tier at $49.17 a month covers 250 billable conversations, but the AI conversations are a separate allowance, and the page as we read it prices the Lyro add-on only at its 50 conversation entry point. The firm would need to price 150 Lyro conversations on the live page before comparing.

Now take a dealership group handling 5,000 chat conversations a month across its stores. At $0.99 each, Fin bills $4,950 a month, or $59,400 a year. The token bill on the Sonnet 5.5 split is $65 a month (5,000 times $0.013).

The saving is $4,885 a month. A $75,000 build pays back in about 15.4 months and a $150,000 build in about 30.7 months. Assume $1,000 a month of maintenance, again our illustration, and the $75,000 build pays back in about 19.3 months ($75,000 divided by $3,885).

This group has a real case for building, and the case gets stronger if the bot qualifies sales leads: 200 qualifications at $9.99 would bill $1,998 a month. Ask Fin how a qualification interacts with the one outcome per conversation rule before you model that.

Why a $130 token bill sits under a $75,000 quote

A skeptical owner will look at the token table and ask why anyone quotes five or six figures for something that costs $130 to run. The answer is on Anthropic's own page: it shows the raw model bill only, not build, hosting or maintenance labor. The model is the cheap part.

The labor is everything around it. Someone has to connect the bot to your calendar, CRM or case system, which is integration work. Someone has to write what it may and may not say, test it against real questions, and build the handoff to a person. None of that appears on a price list.

Doing it yourself is not the discount it looks like. The Master of Code guide prices in-house development higher than agency work in every band: $50,000 to $100,000 for rule-based, $100,000 to $200,000 for AI chatbots, and $200,000 or more for generative AI. Those bands read as written for larger buyers. A small business scoping one use case should treat them as the ceiling, not the quote.

The opposite objection deserves the same scrutiny. $0.99 sounds trivial, but it is about 76 times the $0.013 token cost of the same conversation ($0.99 divided by $0.013). You are paying for the product, the hosting and the upkeep in that fee. At low volume that is a bargain. At 5,000 conversations a month it is $59,400 a year. If a chatbot is one piece of a wider plan, our business AI solutions page shows how the pieces fit together.

Where these numbers do not hold

Phone lines are the biggest gap. Every price here is for text conversations. A voice agent adds telephony and speech processing costs that none of these four pages cover, so do not carry the token math over to a phone line.

The outcome rate is the second gap. Our examples assume every conversation bills, but Fin charges per outcome, and nothing we read says what share of conversations end in one. Your real bill could be well under the examples. Only a trial on your own traffic will tell you.

The units also do not line up cleanly. Fin counts outcomes, Tidio counts billable conversations and Lyro conversations, and the API counts tokens. Our 3,000 and 700 token split is an assumption, and a bot that reads long documents on every question will use more. The agency bands come from one firm's guide with no sample size, so a local quote for a narrow job may land well outside them.

Finally, all three price lists are snapshots from September 29, 2026. Anthropic's note about the cancelled September 1 increase shows how quickly these pages move.

Questions owners ask

How much does a custom AI chatbot cost per month?

It depends on the unit. On price lists read in September 2026, Tidio's Starter plan is $24.17 a month for 100 billable conversations, and Fin bills $0.99 per outcome with a 50 outcome monthly minimum on some helpdesks. A custom build's token bill runs about $0.013 per conversation on our assumed split. The build itself is a separate one-time cost.

Is it cheaper to build a chatbot or pay per resolution?

Paying per resolution is cheaper at low volume. Against a $15,000 build paid back over 24 months, the crossover is about 640 billable outcomes a month, and about 3,200 for a $75,000 build, before maintenance. A two-attorney firm at 150 chats a month should rent. A dealership group at 5,000 a month has a real case for building.

How much do AI chatbot tokens cost for 10,000 conversations?

Anthropic's pricing page, read in September 2026, prints about $37.00 for 10,000 support tickets on Haiku 4.5 at roughly 3,700 tokens each. On our more conservative split of 3,000 input and 700 output tokens, the same volume costs $65 on Haiku 4.5 and $130 on Sonnet 5.5. That is the model bill only, with no build or hosting labor.

What to do this week

  1. Count your conversations. Pull the last 30 days of website chats, contact form questions and after-hours messages, and mark the ones a bot could have closed without a person. That count is your monthly volume.
  2. Run the two lines. Multiply the count by $0.99 for the monthly per-outcome bill. Then divide any build quote by 24 and by $0.977 to see the monthly volume it needs. If your count is far below that, rent.
  3. Measure before you commit. Fin lists a free 14-day trial with no usage limits, and Tidio has a free tier with 50 billable conversations. Use one to learn your real outcome rate, and reread each pricing page on the day you decide.

If you would like a second set of eyes on your numbers, the free 15-minute audit on our custom AI assistants page is a quiet place to start.
